Bollywood stands by Aamir

Presenting a united face, the Bollywood on Monday backed actor Aamir Khan, whose comments on the Narmada dam oustees rehabilitation issue angered the ruling BJP in Gujarat, and demanded the release of Fanaa starring him in the State.Heavyweights of the film industry including producer Yashraj Chopra, actors Anil Kapoor and Anupam Kher, director-producer Subhash Ghai, Pahlaj Nihlani, Ashutosh Gowariker and Film and Television Producers Guild of India president Amit Khanna were present at a press conference here to express solidarity with Aamir Khan. They said the remarks made by the actor were not against Gujarat or its people and he only said what the Supreme Court had already talked on the rehabilitation issue."I am facing a loss of Rs. 1 crore everyday because Fanaa has not been released in Gujarat. The issue is not that of money but of principles. I met Chief Minister Narendra Modi and tried to convince him that it was a question of Aamir's personal views and had nothing to do with my film," the producer of the film told reporters here.Mr. Khan had a right to express his views on any issue in a democratic set-up, Subhash Ghai said. All the speakers said since the film had got a censor certificate no political party or any organisation had a right to demand its ban. "We are all with Aamir and we believe in him. We are united in this issue and would like to urge the government of Gujarat to allow the movie to be released in the State," Anupam Kher, actor and former chief of the Central Board of Film Certification, said. The Aamir-Kajol starrer film, which opened to packed houses last Friday, could not be released in Gujarat after theatre owners in the State refused to screen it following protests by BJP activists over Mr. Khan's remarks on rehabilitation of Narmada dam oustees. While Mr. Khan has refused to apologise as demanded by BJP, many Bollywood stars, including Amitabh Bachchan, have come out in support of the actor, saying he had a right to speak his mind and his films should not be targeted.
